The Sherline Trailer Tongue Weight Scale was developed to make it easy to obtain tongue weight on non-commercial trailers for safe loading and proper trailer handling. If your trailer tongue is severely overloaded or even underloaded, sooner or later disaster will strike. A hitch or tongue weld can snap sending your trailer hurtling headlong into oncoming traffic. A sudden dip or wind gust can start you into an uncontrollable oscillation. Emergency braking can cause trailer dive, pushing extra weight on the already overloaded hitch and lifting your tow vehicle's front end just when you need its steering and braking the most.

Your hitch and trailer guidelines will tell you how much weight should be on the tongue.
For most trailers, 12% to 15% of the total trailer weight is recommended, but how you load your trailer can dramatically change that ratio. Trailer manufacturers spend a lot of time trying to design a safe rig, but you can undo it all by placing heavy weights in the wrong place. Once your trailer tongue is too heavy to lift by hand, it could weigh 200 pounds or 2000 pounds. How do you tell when you're loaded within safe limits? Simple.
